Profile

Matthew's practice predominantly encompasses all areas of family work including the Court of Protection.

Before joining Field Court, Matthew was a tenant at Broadway House Chambers in Leeds where he maintains a door tenancy.

Family

Matthew practice includes the following:

Ancillary relief: Matthew regularly advises clients and attends s.37 and MPS applications, FDRs and final hearings. He also undertakes applications relating to TLATA.

Private law: Matthew has extensive experience in this area, including in temporary and permanent removal from the jurisdiction, allegations of serious domestic violence and sexual assault, and in dealing with vulnerable clients and with mental health issues. He is experienced in cases involving international child abduction, conflict of laws and the inherent jurisdiction of the High Court.

Public law: Matthew has a broad experience in care proceedings representing parents, children and local authorities. He regularly undertakes work involving allegations of sexual abuse, incest, neglect, non-accidental injury and drug and alcohol abuse. He has represented parents in shaken baby cases. He also acts for both local authorities and patients in Court of Protection matters and in the Family Drug and Alcohol Court.

Commercial and Personal Injury work

Mathew’s practice in this area includes commercial dispute ( in relation to sample football caps under the Sale of Goods Act 1979), a dispute as to the appropriate rate of VAT to be applied to services provided under a construction contract, a dispute as to the application of terms as to remuneration in an estate agency contract, and consumer credit disputes, particularly credit hire. 

Matthew also represents claimants and defendants in personal injury claims, road traffic accidents, slip and trip claims, CICA and employers' liability cases.

Previous Career Details

Prior to being called to the Bar, Matthew worked as a consultant for the East Thames Housing association and for Accenture at the London Stock Exchange.

Interests

Matthew enjoys good food - both cooking it and eating it, and, having grown up on a vineyard in Australia, particularly enjoys good wine. When he gets the chance, scuba diving, hill walking, cycling and golf to keep him occupied.

Matthew is a qualified Public Access barrister.
